Asphalt cold patch does not solidify what happened

The temperature is too low: asphalt cold patching material becomes more viscous at low temperatures, and it is easy to lose fluidity. Asphalt cold patching material needs to be used at a certain temperature during construction, if the temperature is too low, the asphalt cold patching material can not be fully softened, which will lead to insufficient densification, cracking, spalling and other problems.


There may be several reasons why asphalt cold patch does not solidify:

The temperature is too low: asphalt cold patching material becomes more viscous at low temperatures, and it is easy to lose fluidity. Asphalt cold patching material needs to be used at a certain temperature during construction, if the temperature is too low, the asphalt cold patching material can not be fully softened, which will lead to insufficient densification, cracking, spalling and other problems.
High humidity: asphalt cold patching material in high humidity environment will absorb water, lose the original performance, and can not be cured.1
Incorrect asphalt cold patch ratio: Insufficient or too much asphalt in the asphalt cold patch ratio will cause it to fail to solidify.

Improper storage conditions: If the asphalt cold patch is stored at too high or too low a temperature, or for too long, it will also fail to solidify.

The repair area is not cleaned: the repair material is easily squeezed and deformed by debris, oil and other obstructions.2

Insufficiently dense asphalt cold patch material: If the asphalt cold patch material is not sufficiently dense after repair, the vibration caused by rain and vehicle driving will cause loosening and collapse.

Insufficient release of solvents in the material: shorten the curing time from 1-2 months to 12 hours, so that it can be opened to traffic immediately after the construction is finished and form the proper strength of asphalt concrete and other indexes within 12 hours.3

Therefore, in order to ensure that cold asphalt patching materials can set, it is necessary to ensure that the temperature and humidity of the construction environment are appropriate, that the proportions are correct, that the storage conditions are proper, that the repair area is clean and clear, and that the solvents in the material are adequately released.
